Another unit has received a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN): Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women and Newborns (CWN) 8 North, Surgical Oncology.
The Beacon Award recognizes units for exceptional patient care and dedication to improving patient outcomes. According to the AACN, recipients provide evidence-based care with a steadfast commitment to a healthy work environment and patient and staff satisfaction.
The Beacon Award highlights how staff on CWN 8N deliver high-quality, safe and compassionate care to all of their patients.
“Receiving the silver-level Beacon Award of Excellence is such an honor,” said Katie Bradley, BSN, RN, nurse-in-charge and one of the authors of the award application. “The nurses who participated in the application process worked hard over several months to gather all of the relevant data. We enjoyed talking about our unit, as we all deeply care about our patients. We work with an exceptional team of nurses, doctors and patient care associates, who are all to thank for this exceptional award!”
AACN reviewers emphasized a number of the unit’s strengths, including staff dedication to providing quality care through active involvement in unit and organizational committees. Reviewers were also impressed with the unit’s communication structure, promoting true collaboration and contributing to a healthy work environment.
Specifically, reviewers commented in their report: “Key performance measures for patient and clinical outcomes, such as HAPI, CLABSI, CAUTI, hand hygiene, fall prevention/post-fall documentation, medication administration safety and patient experience, enable the unit to provide continual care improvement. Additionally, the team provides evidence-based recommendations to aid in care to ensure quality outcomes.”
“The Beacon Award is a true testament to the exceptional patient care provided and to the spirit of collegiality that makes our team very special,” said Nursing Director MaryKate Hegarty, MSN, RN, PCCN.
In addition to Bradley, the application authors include Elizabeth Callaghan, BSN, RN; Sarah Geraghty, BSN, RN; Madeline Johnson, BSN, RN; Emily Lucich, BSN, RN; Alyssa Willis, BSN, RN; and Caroline Zacharchuk, BSN, RN.
