Maureen Keaty

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital community mourns the loss of Maureen Keaty, BSN, RN, of Radiation Oncology. She died Oct. 10.

Known for her caring, compassionate nature and devotion to her patients, Mrs. Keaty recently marked her 40-year anniversary at the Brigham, having joined upon graduating from the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing.

“For the past four decades, Maureen dedicated herself to the care of her patients in a very quiet way,” said Elizabeth Healey Baldini, MD, of Radiation Oncology. “She cared deeply about each and every one, treated them all with compassion and respect and delivered impeccable care. She also cared deeply for us, her colleagues. She was a true unsung hero.”

Miranda Lam, MD, of Radiation Oncology, said it was a privilege to work with Mrs. Keaty.

“She had a heart of gold,” Lam said. “Our patients always sung Maureen’s praises. She not only was knowledgeable about addressing their needs, but also very compassionate, with wonderful bedside manner. She always went above and beyond to make sure that our patients’ needs were addressed.”

Colleen Whitehouse, DNP, RN, nursing director of Radiation Oncology, agreed, adding that Mrs. Keaty was an amazing nurse. “She made sure each of her patients received the best care.”

Regina Tsanotelis, BSN, RN, worked with Mrs. Keaty for 16 years.

“She was my friend and colleague, a ‘giver’ who loved patient care and gave of herself with passion and compassion,” Tsanotelis said. “With her colleagues, she shared her expertise on skin care and computers and many other topics she may have read about. Maureen was always learning. She was not shy about sharing her thoughts and opinions on life. I will miss her dearly and wish her eternal peace.”

Mrs. Keaty’s loved ones say that her caring nature was felt by everyone who knew her.

“She never hesitated to help a loved one in need, whether with her superb nursing skills, her excellent cooking and baking, or simply with her caring, supportive presence,” according to her obituary. “She had a knack for picking out the perfect gift for any occasion, for creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind cards and jewelry, for recommending great books to read, and for decorating a home or table to be understated, gracious and inviting.”

Mrs. Keaty graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with her bachelor’s degree in 2012 and received a certification in massage therapy to enhance her holistic nursing practice.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony Keaty; her father, Ronald Brady; her brother, Thomas Brady; her sisters, Carol Sue (Williams) Shannon, Patricia (Joseph) Kidd, and Deborah (Demian) Battit; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, several other relatives and dear friends.
