Magnet® Making the Rounds

On Dec. 15, BWH’s journey toward Magnet designation was the focus of Nursing Grand Rounds in Bornstein. Rosemary O’Malley, MSN, MBA, RN, and Mary Lou Etheredge, MS, RN, PMHCNS-BC, BWH co-program directors for Magnet, provided an overview of the Magnet Recognition Program® and an update on our ongoing document submission work.

In addition to the information shared by the presenters, there was terrific participation on the part of audience members who asked thoughtful questions and provided excellent examples of outstanding nursing practice taking place on inpatient units and in ambulatory areas. The document submission phase of the Magnet process requires the applicant organization to identify almost 75 examples of superior clinical practice that demonstrates the organization meets or exceeds Magnet’s standards and criteria for designation. Among the many examples BWH has chosen to showcase are: the Nurse Preceptorship program, the Newly Licensed Nurse program and the Ebola Emergency Response initiative.

Over the next several weeks, the BWH Magnet Writers’ Group will be putting the final touches on the documentation of evidence so that it is ready for submission on April 1. Stay tuned as we ramp up the communication phase of our Magnet journey and begin preparations for an eventual site visit that we hope will take place in late summer or early fall.
