BWH celebrated its first DAISY Award honoree, Lorelei Dwyer, MSN, AGPCNP-BC, a clinical nurse in the Neuroscience Intermediate Care Unit, last October. Since then, two new DAISY honorees have been announced for December and January. They are Monica Gada, BSN, RN, a clinical nurse on Tower 12C, inpatient Oncology, who was recognized in December, and Laura Gillespie, RN, OCN, a clinical nurse on Tower 7D inpatient Hematology/Oncology, and January’s honoree.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is an international recognition program established in 1999 by the Barnes family. The family piloted the DAISY Award at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to thank the nurses who had provided such compassionate care for their son, Patrick, before he passed away due to complications from an autoimmune disease. “Our goal was to ensure that nurses know how deserving they are of our society’s profound respect for the education, training, brainpower, and skill they put into their work, and especially for the compassion with which they deliver their care,” the family expressed. The DAISY Award has since been adopted by healthcare facilities all over the U.S. and beyond.

Each month at BWH, The DAISY Award committee selects an honoree from patient, family and staff nominations. Congratulations to the more than 65 BWH nurses who have been nominated for the Award.
