Despite different languages, cultures and geographic locations, Brigham nurses and Boao Evergrande International Hospital nurses have something important in common: a desire to ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible care.

Nurses from both institutions had an opportunity to meet and collaborate this spring as part of an ongoing relationship between Brigham Health and Evergrande Health. BWH clinicians, administrators and other staff have provided strategic guidance to Evergrande as it designed the hospital in China’s Hainan province and developed processes and procedures for patient care.

BWH and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute nurses traveled to China in May to lead a two-week course on oncology care and discuss their work in advancing nursing practice.

“It was a privilege and honor to share my love for oncology nursing with the Boao Evergrande nurses,” said Cathleen Rowland, MSN, MPH, RN, OCN, BMTCN, professional development manager for Oncology and Medicine. “From the first day, it was evident that they share the same passion for patient-centered care that we have here at the Brigham.”

In addition to Rowland, nurses who participated in the visit to China include: Yi Jin, BSN, RN, former clinical nurse in oncology (now at DFCI); Lisa Morrissey, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, associate chief nurse of Peri-procedural areas; and Anne Elperin, MSN, NP, RN, ANP-BC, AOCNP, nurse clinical specialist at DFCI. They were joined by BWH’s Amy Hsieh, program manager for Business Development and Strategic Initiatives, and J. Stephen Bohan, MD, MS, of Emergency Medicine.
