From left, Chantale Scott, Susan Ayers, Theresa Traskos, Josette Renda, Rose LaPlante, Cory Gallant, Shelby Small and Joanna Magee discuss clinical leadership and how they operationalized the Magnet Model within the scope of the Nursing professional practice model on their units during the April 19 Nursing Grand Rounds presentation, “Authentic Leadership: The Magnet Champions.”

For four days in March, nurses throughout the hospital impressed Magnet appraisers with the outstanding care they provide every day at BWH. Nurses enthusiastically told the appraisers about process improvement efforts, how they ensure safe, high-quality care, how they collaborate with their interprofessional colleagues and what their nursing practice means to them.

Many nurses described the site visit and the Magnet journey as a powerful, transformative experience that generated pride throughout the institution and enhanced collaboration among units.

This word cloud captures some of the words nurses and other staff have used to describe the Magnet journey and site visit.

“The journey allowed me to get to know colleagues and other amazing facets and areas of the hospital that I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to know,” said Laurie Rotondo, BSN, RN, assistant nurse director of the Patient Access Center.

Donna Dello Iacono, NP, PhD, CNL, CLC, of the Weiner Center, agreed. “It was great to see the teams from other sites and learn about their work and how we can adapt their ideas and successes in our setting,” she said. “I also was honored to be able to hold a mirror to the critically important and collaborative care in the Weiner Center.”

Josette Renda, BSN, RN, of the PACU, spoke about the excitement that radiated throughout the Perioperative areas when the appraiser visited. “There was such positive energy among staff, and we were truly excited to share what we do,” she said. “The whole experience was uplifting.”

BWH is awaiting the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s decision on whether the hospital achieved Magnet designation. Stay tuned!
